I’ve tried many using “Install Vista from USB guide” but after downloading Windows 7 beta, the usual Kurt‘s method did not work for me , giving me some error stating there’s a partition boot error. I found a method which worked for Windows 7 so time to share! ^_^

Index

1. Stuff we need
2. Why not DVD?
3. Instructions!
4. ALL done!
5. Which DISK?

Go to top

Stuff we need

- USB Pen Drive! or USB hard drive (at least 4gb)
- The windows image file (duh!)
- A motherboard supporting bootable USB drives (even my 4 yr old comp has it)
- A cup of coffee.Go to top

Why not DVD?

If you’re just the average user, installing for a dvd is just fine, but when installing Windows on multiple computers, it’s going to be annoying because the time spent waiting isn’t worth it. Installing via the USB 2.0 drives are so much faster than DVD’s and that’s my way to go from now on. Of course, keep the good ol’ DVD in case of emergency. I’ve cut down installation times from 40 mins to around 20 mins on my loyal AMD Opteron rig.

Go to top

Instructions!

1. Plug in your USB pendrive. You’ll see something like this in your My Computer
(i’m using an external 40gb usb drive, taken from my PS3 xD)

2. Format the usb drive from cmd.
- From Start Menu > Run > type “cmd”
- make sure you have Adminstrator rights!

3. Next we type in the set of commands. I will assume your USB drive is DISK 1. (Don’t know which disk? Read here)
- Type DISKPART
- Type SELECT DISK 1
- Type CLEAN
- Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
- Type ACTIVE
- Optional, you might this if can’t format. Type SELECT VOLUME #, just type LIST VOLUME beforehand
- Type FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK
- Type ASSIGN
- Type EXIT

Now you’ll be back in CMD not DISKPART. Don’t exit CMD yet.

Example

4. Extract or mount the image file, or insert the Windows DVD into your optical drive.
- If you have a Windows 7 or Vista DVD then insert into the drive and note the Drive letter
- If you have the image file then mount it or extract it.
- I have mine extracted into a folder on my C:

I’m going to assume your DVD drive is E: and USB drive is F:

- Type E: CD BOOT
- Type CD BOOT
- Type BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 F:

If you’ve extracted to a folder on your computer, the command is the same except;
- Type CD C:\Foldername\
- In my example is CD C:\Windows7\

5. Copy the Windows files content into the USB pendrive.

- Type XCOPY E:\*.* /s/e/f F:\

If you’ve extracted to a folder on you computer like me, then;
- Type XCOPY C:\Foldername\*.* /s/e/f F:\

Go to top

All Done!

Okay, now the USB drive is bootable!, make sure to change your motherboard’s boot sequence, usually press DEL, F1 or ESC at the bootscreen! Good luck!

Credits to: HOWTO: Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Go to top

Which DISK?

When entered DISKPART, you might have many hard disk installed.
- Type ”LIST DISK”
- Look for the correct disk size to decide which Disk is your USB drive.

PS3 Media Server is a new program so much easier to set up than TVersity. It’s Java based, works for Windows or Linux and capable of transcoding any HD content to your PS3 with subtitles on the fly.

Okay for those people who followed my TVersity guide, you should install Vista Codec Pack and remove “ffdshow-tryouts” although it isn’t necessary.

And this program works well with the Xbox 360 as well! Try PS3 Media Server!

Playing the video files (some extracted from Readme)

- Install PS3 Media Server. Download it here.

- Get and install AVISynth 2.5.7 from here (2.5.8 not recommended)

- Install codec pack, I recommend Vista Codec Pack or if you are using Windows 7, use Win7 Codec Pack

- Set up the FFDShow Audio Decoder Config > Mixer to your preference, or this one 5.1 (3/0/2 LFE)

- Set “Autoload VSFilter” to Yes in Haali Splitter settings. *if necessary*

- Configure Haali Splitter (audio/subtitles language priorities) *if necessary*

- You can have optional codecs i.e. CoreAVC, Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

Fine Tuning PS3 Media Server

Mencoder settings:

Common transcode settings:

- UPDATE: v1.10.5 has improved Mencoder settings especially with subtitles, so no need to play with AviSynth priorities anymore.
- There’s nothing much to tweak for this program as it runs perfectly fine after install.
- Go to Navigation/Share settings and add the folder you want your video files played.
- Download “VSFilter.dll” here. Place it inside Avisynth’s plugin folder found in “Program Files/Avisynth 2.5/plugin”.
- Go to Transcoding Settings to change your Video quality, I use Good Quality and everything plays without stuttering.
*- Change “Avisynth/Mencoder” to 1st priority by clicking the Up/Down arrow on the bottom.*

If your PS3 detects the Media Server, everything should play up nicely!

Notes

- You must have .avi files with .ass subtitle files in the same folder with same name and they will play just fine in your PS3.

Wanna use your PS3 Guitar Hero World Tour guitar on the PC (or Guitar Hero 3)? Then this guide’s for you!

- Firstly, you’ll need to download some files!

JoyToKey v3.79 from Here | Mirror

Download the PS3 Guitar config file Here

You need the Gibson Les Paul PS3 guitar and the game. Duh!

- Okay, now extract the JoyToKey file and throw in the PS3 Guitar config file into the same folder where you extracted JoyToKey.
- Plug in the Guitar’s USB connector.
- Run JoyToKey and choose PS3 guitar.
- Run Guitar Hero 3/Aerosmith for the PC. (should work for Frets on Fire)
- Go to Options > Controller > Configure Keyboard and set it up this way

Green —– 1
Red —– 2
Yellow —– 3
Blue —– 4
Orange —– 5
Star Power —– 6
Whammy —– 7
Mouse Whammy —– X-Axis
Strum Up —– Button 1
Strum Down —– Button 0

- It should work!!! ROCK N’ ROLL!!

Notes

- Apparently the motion sensor does not work, when you want to do Star Power. You have to press the button. Well, World Tour’s guitar has the star power button which is easier to reach!
- Whammy works perfectly!
- Pressing “Enter” when asked to key name for High Score doesn’t seem to work either. I had to press “Backspace” on the keyboard.

This guide shows you how to Use PS3 Controller in Windows 7, Vista and XP (Wireless Bluetooth). Following up to the guide on using PS3 Controller in Windows, here’s another one to use it via Bluetooth. And now it has vibration support as well! Hope this guide helps! Also, for those who want to copy anything from my guide please do inform me. I hate it when people just claim everything as their own work.

Revision 2.1 (24th August 2009)
- Will be inspecting MotionInJoy and if works well, I might make a guide.
- Cleaned some text and added recommended BT dongles.
Revision 2.0 (30th July 2009)
- Guide updated for Windows 7.
- Images from Windows 7 included (relevant for Vista).
- Notes on TWO controllers and ONE dongle.
- Added link to 64-bit users. It works now.

- First, we need these;

Bluetooth dongle! duh!

- Then, download these files:

FreeBT driver rel. A3 (allows BtSix to access dongle, Optional): Link

Installing Libusb-win32 filter

- for XP, stick with v0.1.10.1
- for Vista and Windows 7, stick with v0.1.12.1

Install the Libusb drivers as “Administrator” and Compatibility Mode set to “Windows XP Service Pack 2/3″

Note: If your USB devices start to disappear (usually happen because failure to install in Compatibility mode) or crippled your system devices, then try updating your chipset drivers (which worked for me). Because of the nature of libusb, it sort of takes control over anything related to the USB devices. So it would be best if you had a PS2 keyboard and mouse in case shit happens.

Go to top

Installing Bluetooth drivers

- This is by far the most problematic step because some people have integrated bluetooth which they use for other purposes. If it doesn’t work read the end of this section.

- Extract the “BtSix1.5c.zip” file to your desktop first.
- Laptop users:

It works on integrated bluetooth but my advice is to get a BT dongle because you will less likely mess up with the drivers (i.e. works for BtSix but not for your other apps anymore).

Another solution is to purchase WinDS3 because apparently it can swap drivers easily for you with a click of a button (maybe someone from the WinDS3 team can confirm with me)

- Desktop users:

Get a good bluetooth dongle, I recommend the one shown in the picture (ASUS brand). I also have a cheap one and works perfect as well. Link to product: Here

This is a good one which I’ve purchased before but I think it’s sold out:
USB Bluetooth 2.0 Mini-Dongle / Adapter (30-Meter Range) by Pexell

Or these which I’ve hand picked from Amazon Store

I will choose this one first (CHEAP! and high rating), should work really well for our purpose.

Next I’ll choose this dongle because i think it has many features and good review.

Most people who simply solved their issues by purchasing a quality dongle.

- Install BtSix freeBT drivers;

For new Bluetooth dongle,
- Plug it into the computer and Windows will either ask you for drivers or automatically install them for you.
- Point to the folder location of BtSix’s “Driver XP 32 Bit” folder and choose the .inf file.

For those with existing dongle or integrated bluetooth devices,
- Go to “Device Manager” and find your Bluetooth device.
- Right-click the “Bluetooth device”
- Choose “Update Driver Software”
- Choose “Browse My Computer for Driver Software”
- Choose “Let Me Pick From A List”
- Choose the “Have Disk” option and point to the “BtSix.1.5c\Driver XP 32bit” folder as shown.
- Just press OK and Next to install the drivers. Make sure to choose “Install the drivers anyway option”.

- You will have FreeBT device similar to the pic.

- Still doesn’t work on your laptop etc? You might need to download WinDS3 trial version and then perform a cheap trick by installing it. Your purpose is to make sure the freebt bluetooth drivers are installed into your computer (WinDS3 sort of forces it to install? haha)

Installing PPJoy

- Run PPJoy which you’ve downloaded. (Compatibility mode to XP SP3 is preferable)

Launch “Configure Joysticks” from PPJoy, and add a new virtual controller.

Windows might ask you to install drivers, in that case you’ll need to look for BtSix’s “Driver XP 32 Bit” folder.

You can start mapping the buttons to your liking, but feel free to do it later.

You can close “Configure Joysticks”.

Go to top

Making it Work

- Make sure you’ve plugged your Bluetooth dongle (directly to PC, preferably not to a hub)
- Plug in your PS3 controller into the PC using the USB cable
- The drivers should install automatically.
- Launch “BtSix.exe” and click “Address“. There should be a hex code for your controller. If not, there’ll be a warning.
- You can now unplug your controller, and press the PS Home button.
- The “Pitch” and “Roll” Bars will be moving based on your controller’s movement.
Go to top

Configuring Buttons

- Now its time to configure the controller buttons.

- Choose “Configure Joysticks” from PPJoy and choose “Virtual Controller 1″

- You will have to restart BtSix every time you change the key mappings.

- Some Games for Windows (such as GTA4 and X360 ports) will run the PS3 controller (with key map A below) just like the X360 controller by inserting a .DLL file into the game folder. Here it is: DLL

- Tomb Raider Underworld, Silent Hill Homecoming, Price of Persia and Mirror’s Edge uses the 360 mapping as well and PS3 controller WORKS with the PC version.
- For The Last Remnant, make sure you insert the .DLL files into your “binary” folder (vibration support)! Download here

(B) Setting for Dead Space PC

Image Link: Dead Space PC PPJoy Button Mapping

- Dead Space uses Xbox 360 controller input so the PS3 controller CAN work too.
- You just have to change some settings in PPJoy, see the picture above.

(C) Setting for Devil May Cry 4 / DMC4

- You have to use Xpadder for this to work. Get it here.

- Using this PPJoy config as shown here: PC PPJoy Button Mapping

- Place the files into the Xpadder folder and run the game.

- Test and it should work! (xpadder controller file may not work for your computer, you can create one yourself)

Using TWO controller with ONE dongle

- My brother had issues with Libusb-win32 and caused a bluescreen (BSOD) everytime he shuts down or restart.

– Assuming libusb32 v0.1.12.1 is installed, the problem can be fixed by deleting the libusb0.sys and libusb.dll from system32 and system32/driver folder. Then without uninstalling v0.1.12.1, we install libusb32 v0.1.10.1 on top of it.

– It should not BSOD now.

– Recently my brother just reinstalled windows and according to him SetPoint version also affects the BSOD. Newer version of Setpoint seems to have fixed conflicts with libusb32 and he does not BSOD even with v0.1.12.1 is installed. Go to top

64-bit users

- I have discovered a guide that says it’ll work on 64-bit computers. I have not tried the method myself but please tell me if they do work.

– Here’s the link: How to use a Playstation 3 Controller in 64 bit Windows 7 and Vista

- Libusb win64: Link

– Vista64 needs signed drivers from Microsoft, here’s a way to bypass them (few methods to try at your own risk!):

– PPJoy is only working for Vista 32 at the moment.

– In conclusion, you can’t use BtSix for Vista64 yet.

Hope you like the guide! Support me by donating! Go to top

Important Notes

- The controller can only be paired with either the PC or the PS3. So you have to turn OFF your nearby PS3 first.
- Once paired to the PC you can switch on the PS3. It’s not much of a hassle, really.
- I’ve also successfully used my Dualshock 3 to control windows with the help ofXpadder.

Other help:
- I got most of my info searching through forums and other guides.
- Here are some of the good ones: Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Problems installing drivers:
- For those who can’t get Bluetooth drivers to install on their system, I recommend installing WinDS3 (Buy if you like it!!) (its trial but it helps install the drivers for you)
- After that, use the above methods to map the buttons. (thanks Jay for the tip!)

This guide is to show you how to Use PS3 Controller in Windows – (Wired). Works for Windows 7, Vista and XP. Those using their SIXAXIS or Dualshock 3 controller can use this guide. There are FOUR methods to use from. I strongly suggest purchasing a bluetooth dongle because it’s much easier to set up the buttons! I”m not using wired anymore but I’ll test if I have free time.

Note:

- Method A is the first and original method (did not work for me)

- Method B is my preferred method.

- Method C is an improvement of Method A, utilizing PPJoy but not for Dualshock3.

- Method D is the latest and drivers created by a Japanese coder. This should be the BEST method, currently.

Index

1. Method A
2. Method B
3. Method C
4. Method D

Go to top

Method A

1. Download this archive

2. Install the filter driver (libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe or 0.1.12.1 is fine).

3. Vista users, run libusb driver at “XP SP2 Compatibility Mode” and “Run as Administrator”.

4. Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.exe

5. Plug the SIXAXIS/DS3 into your PC.

6. Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once.

7. Push the PS button on the SIXAXIS once if it doesn’t see it straight away.

- I’ve realised that the libusb-win32 drivers had to be installed in Vista as Administrator and Compatibility Mode. So it should be where I went wrong the last time I’ve tried. It should work for Vista and XP now but I haven’t tried as I’m going wireless now.

Go to top

Method B

- Method A DID NOT work for me (although it should now) so I used another driver. Here’s the page for the driver:

CodeProject: Wired PS3 Six Axis Controller Using USB HID as Input.

- Just download this: SixAxisDriver.exe. Works fine for my Dualshock 3. Just plug the controller in via USB and load drivers and Windows will recognize the controller.

- To configure the buttons, maybe try using this program called PPJoy. If to no avail, then try WinSIXAXIS mentioned below.

Go to top

Method C

- An alternative which I’ve found recently is WinSIXAXIS, it’s worth trying as it saves the trouble of manually installing the drivers and libusb-win32. It also uses PPJOY to map buttons. Download WinSIXAXIS here. I’ve tested it and my notes are down below.

- Yes, this works for wired controller only, for wireless there’s a program called BtSix.

- You can get the latest BtSix here. I have tested with my Bluetooth 2.0 dongle and it works!

- Here’s the guide to Use PS3 Controller in Windows via Wireless Bluetooth!

- I have tested WinSIXAXIS and here’s my notes on it: ( I assume that everyone is using Vista and had ps3sixaxis_en.exe installed first before trying WinSIXAXIS)

- WinSIXAXIS has freezing issues and DOES NOT support Dualshock3 (constant vibration).
- Anyone who have success with WinSIXAXIS please do comment so to let people know if it works.

To Fix Freezing Issue

To fix this, you have to remove ps3sixaxis_en.exe completely (and libusb-win32 drivers first).

Then next step is to ensure total removal of the drivers for the PS3 controller.

Go to Device Manager and when you plug in your PS3 controller, you will see the “USB Human Interface Device” come up. This should be your PS3 controller.

To confirm that it is, you have to counter-check by going to “Control Panel > Game Controllers” and see that your “PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller” is there.

Disable the “USB Human Interface Device” in Device Manager, and in Game Controllers window, your controller should dissapear. Enable and it will reappear again.

This is to confirm that it is your PS3 Controller you’re messing with. (Yes, stupid but safe than sorry)

Okay, Confirmed. Now Right-Click and select “Uninstall“.

We’re almost there. If you have PPJoy installed, please Uninstall PPJoy first.

Now after clearing everything, we have to create our own .inf driver file

Download the file here.

Extract the file and go to “bin” folder, open “inf-wizard.exe“

Plug in your PS3 controller to PC via usb cable, there will be a usb device added into the list in “inf-wizard.exe”

Select it, and click Next.

Change the Manufacturer name to “Sony“

Change the Device name to “PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller“.

Press Next, and save the “name.inf” file to the “bin” folder. (there should be a .cat and .inf file created)

Please make sure that the .inf file is together with “libusb0.dll” and “libusb0.sys”

Keeping the controller plugged in via usb cable, go to “Control Panel > Device Manager“, select the PS3 Controller from the list of “Human Interface Devices”. It should be “USB Human Interface Device“

Right-click and choose “Update drivers” and choose “Have disk method“.

Point to the “bin” folder and installation should proceed.

Now we’re done installing the drivers for the PS3 Controller.

Install WinSIXAXIS which comes along with PPJoy and LibUsb-Win32 drivers. Remember Vista users, install LibUsb drivers as Administrator and Compatibility Mode to XP SP2.

Just cancel Libusb-win32 installation. Navigate to Program Files>WinSIXAXIS>Installer and Run Libusb-win32 drivers.

AFTER ALL THAT, you can finally use the guide from the Author here.

Go to top

Method D

- Japanese coder, Tamamy, released Windows Drivers for the Dualshock 3 and supports SixAxis too. It has rumble support too.

- First you need to download the 4 driver files from here (translated version)

ds3drv_1.03 – Normal driver version

ds3drv_dx_1.03.1.14 – DX driver version

SDDriverSetting (english) – utility to tweak some settings including bluetooth

ForceFeedbackDriver – Rumble driver, install Normal or DX version first

TaskTraySwitch – you may need this when using rumble

- After that, plug in your PS3 controller with USB cable and go to Control Panel > Device Manager.

- Extract all the driver files you’ve downloaded.

- Under Human Interface Device, there will be “USB Human Interface Device” . Right-click and choose “update driver software” and select the “Have Disk” method and point to “dualshock3.inf” which you’ve extracted.

- For the ForceFeedback drivers, you have to right-click on the “DUALSHOCK3FF.inf” file and choose “Install”, then when you’re gaming there will be a tray icon to tweak the rumble settings. First menu asks to toggle on/off rumble. Second menu opens a window to tweak strength of rumble for the controller.

- This page might be of interest for you guys as it discusses this method: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179397

- Notes: I have tried and Windows recognizes all six-axis and buttons but can’t really play games unlike BtSix, bluetooth method. I think Xpadder will do the job fine but mapping the keys is pain in the arse.

Guide right HERE.

There are tons of guides to help you do this but I thought I would make a little guide myself for bloggers on WP. Most anime and drama series now use ASS/SSA subtitle format or the much more conventional SRT files so ffdshow would work for everyone. This method should also let you load an external srt subtitle file for your video. This guide should for for Vista 64-bit too.

To install ffdshow-tryouts, download the latest:

ffdshow, I use ffdshow tryouts

TVersity

_MatroskaSplitter.zip : download

_MP4Splitter.zip : download

- Uninstall all your codecs first!! Uninstall Haali if you have it!

- Some has 2 versions available for the splitters.

For Windows Vista DON’T use Unicode.
Other version of Windows (i.e. 2000/XP) use Unicode.
This might have changed, as newer filters just have Unicode versions. Don’t worry, install and try for yourselves, if it works, good. Not? try another one. I have provided the old links just in case.

We have to install the splitters manually.

Copy the file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory

Open Command Prompt (Start > Run > type “cmd”)

type “regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax”

type “regsvr32 MP4Splitter.ax”

If done correctly, you will receive a success prompt.

- Make sure you have a Windows administrator account with a password. Somehow TVersity won’t allow transcoding with subtitles if your account has no password. (do this in Control Panel). Also make sure Media Sharing is disabled in Windows Vista via the Network and Sharing Center.

- Install ffdshow you’ve downloaded

Go to “ffdshow video decoder” settings (Start Menu > ffdshow) and scroll to “Subtitles” section and make sure it looks like the picture shown.

You should also change the Extensions priority to “srt, ass, ssa” or whichever your external subtitle type is.

Please note that external subtitle file has to be exact same name as the video too.

Then make sure transcoding is ON, also when adding folders to share in TVersity, make sure in Advanced setting the folder is set to “Always” and not “N/A”. This should make external srt subtitle work.

- Install TVersity. Did i forget to tell you this? (better than Tversity)

install without TVersity codec pack and set as a service.

Go to Start > Run > type “services.msc” to bring up the services window.

Scroll down to UPnP Device Host and make sure it’s set to Automatic.

Scroll down to TVersity Media Server, double click to open it’s Properties.

You can set to Automatic or Manual. (i have mine set to manual)

At “Log On” tab, click Browse > Advanced > Find Now and pick your account

Make sure it’s set to an account (mine’s called Administrator) on the computer as shown in the picture.

- Edit TVersity settings for PS3. Did i forget to tell you this? (better than Tversity)

Set the media device to Playstation 3.

Set transcoder to always ON (you can disable transcoding for avi files as shown below).

Resolution can be set to 1280×720 or anything smaller. (i.e. 1024×576, 704×396 as long as smaller number divided by larger number = 0.5625)

Optimization: Quality, Wired Connection High and Minimum compression.

Tweaking further, go to (Program Files>TVersity>Media Server) and open the profiles.xml file in wordpad and edit the Playstation 3 section.
Change the video and onlineVideo from mpeg16 to mpeg2

<transcodeTarget audio=”audio/x-wav” video=”video/mpeg2″ photo=”image/jpeg”
onlineAudio=”audio/mpeg” onlineVideo=”video/mpeg2″ onlinePhoto=”image/jpeg”
adjustReadStartPos=”false” audioFailFutureSeek=”false” videoFailFutureSeek=”true” />

If you have firewall, make an exception for TVersity’s mediaserver.exe.

- I notice the PS3 transcoding stutters once the bitrate reaches 9mbps or more, especially in my mkv files. There is a small solution to it. To fix it, I edit the config.xml file in (Program Files>TVersity>Media Server) folder. These settings reduced the bitrate and audio quality but not noticable to my eyes. You can reduce the videoCompressionRatio to something lower. Try playing around with the values.

<maxAudioInfo sampleRate=”48000″ bitsperSample=”16″ bitrate=”128000” nchannels=”6″></maxAudioInfo>

<maxVideoInfo width=”1280″ height=”720″ bitrate=”4250000” fps=”30></maxVideoInfo>

videoCompressionRatio=”18“

downsampleForConnectionSpeed=”false”

- For avi files which don’t need to be transcoded just make sure you set transcoding as Never. Note that if you have external subtitle file, please set to Always instead.

- Start sharing and test whether it works!

Notes:

- You can add srt subtitle file(s) quickly to AVI files using this tool, AVIAddXSubs. Using the small guide shown here.
- It muxes the files to divx and includes the subtitles. Press Triangle when playing the video and get the subtitle option. With this, you don’t need to share in TVersity, just copy into your flash drive and watch it.
- If you add the divx file in TVersity, it should work without transcoding!

Hmm, thats all i guess! There are other guides around the net just google around to find out which one works for you.
