Connecting to Melbourne Uni with a Nokia Symbian phone wasn’t as easy as I thought, but I managed to get it to work on my E71. It should work with 802.11x enabled phones, N-series and E-series, and all Series 60 Symbian OS phones.

The Wireless SSID is “UniWireless”

Alright, here goes!

A.  Define SSID

  1. Go to Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points.
  2. Click on Options, then New access point.
  3. Under Connection name, key in UniWireless.
  4. Under Data bearer, select Wireless LAN.
  5. Under WLAN network name, key in UniWireless.
  6. Under Network status, leave as Public.
  7. Under WLAN netw. mode, leave as Infrastructure.
  8. Under WLAN security mode, select 802.1x.
  9. Click on WLAN security settings, it redirects to another page.
  10. Under The WPA/WPA2 , leave it as EAP.
  11. Enter EAP plugin-settings, and brings you to another page.
  12. ENABLE EAP-PEAP (check mark will only appear beside EAP-PEAP) and DISABLE the rest. Leave ONLY EAP-PEAP enabled.
  13. Enter EAP-PEAP, and you will get into another page.

  7. Under Allow PEAPv0, select Yes.
  8. Under Allow PEAPv1, select No.
  9. Under Allow PEAPv2, select No.
  10. Move to EAPs tab, by pressing your right arrow key. (most people don’t notice this tab!)

C. Configuring EAP-MSCHAPv2

  1. ENABLE EAP-MSCHAPv2 (check mark will only appear beside EAP-MSCHAPv2) and DISABLE the rest. Leave ONLY EAP-MSCHAPv2 ENABLED.
  2. Click on EAP-MSCHAPv2, and you will get into a new page.
  3. Under User name, key in your UniMelb UserID. (the one for e-mail login purposes)
  4. Under Prompt password, select No.
  5. Under Password, key in your UniMelb Password.
  6. Click Back 3 times.
