ps3 index console Guide to streaming videos with subtitle on PS3 with Java PS3 Media Server!Alright guys, this is a Guide to streaming videos with subtitle on PS3 with Java PS3 Media Server! PS3 Media Server is a new program so much easier to set up than TVersity. It’s Java based, works for Windows or Linux and capable of transcoding any HD content to your PS3 with subtitles on the fly.

Okay for those people who followed my TVersity guide, you should install Vista Codec Pack and remove “ffdshow-tryouts” although it isn’t necessary.

And this program works well with the Xbox 360 as well! Try PS3 Media Server!

Playing the video files (some extracted from Readme)

- Install PS3 Media Server. Download it here.

- Get and install AVISynth 2.5.7 from here (2.5.8 not recommended)

- Install codec pack, I recommend Vista Codec Pack or if you are using Windows 7, use Win7 Codec Pack

- Set up the FFDShow Audio Decoder Config > Mixer to your preference, or this one 5.1 (3/0/2 LFE)

- Set “Autoload VSFilter” to Yes in Haali Splitter settings. *if necessary*

- Configure Haali Splitter (audio/subtitles language priorities) *if necessary*

- You can have optional codecs i.e. CoreAVC, Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

Fine Tuning PS3 Media Server

Common transcode settings:

- UPDATE: v1.10.5 has improved Mencoder settings especially with subtitles, so no need to play with AviSynth priorities anymore.
- There’s nothing much to tweak for this program as it runs perfectly fine after install.
- Go to Navigation/Share settings and add the folder you want your video files played.
- Download “VSFilter.dll” here. Place it inside Avisynth’s plugin folder found in “Program Files/Avisynth 2.5/plugin”.
- Go to Transcoding Settings to change your Video quality, I use Good Quality and everything plays without stuttering.
*- Change “Avisynth/Mencoder” to 1st priority by clicking the Up/Down arrow on the bottom.*

If your PS3 detects the Media Server, everything should play up nicely!

Notes

- You must have .avi files with .ass subtitle files in the same folder with same name and they will play just fine in your PS3.

Hmm, i think it’s not possible yet. You can try something like this to your PMS shortcut,

“C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\PMS.exe” /nomutex

but I don’t think two servers will be created. AFAIK Tversity can’t achieve this too hmmm

PMS works great and it is indeed much easier to setup than Tversity. The only slight problem I have so far is that it takes a long time for PS3 to read the files (avi, mkv, mp3 etc) from the PMS. Tversity was much quicker on that part. Any thoughts?

That works great actually, I feel kind of stupid not seeing that setting myself. Thanks so much.

I tried just installing the PS3 Media Server along with the CCCP for an experiment. It seems to work fine, except for a few stutters for a few 720P and 1080P .MKV files. I think that is a transcoding problem or a connection issue since I use WIFI for my PS3. The CPU gets shotted up to 100% usuage whenever i try to play one of those. I use a C2D 6400, 2GB of ram, and an Nvida Geforce 8800GTS card. do you happen to know why this happens?

and is there any difference trying out the codecs you posted? btw is there any option to move the subtitles just up a little bit? some videos i’ve played, the subtitles are borderline on the bottom and it makes it hard to read. any replies back would be great!

hello there, I think you should try ffdshow-tryouts, they work much better with subtitles. Mine looks as though playing from the PC,

I use wifi to transmit to my ps3 as well and yes, 1080p videos will stutter. 720p will still be fine though, it depends on the bitrate of the video. Defnitely choose the correct settings, the average one does wonders for me. From your comp spec seems like it’s capable of handling all well, it just depends on how far ur comp is!

Make sure your ffdshow settings are like this: http://davieslim.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/ffdshow.jpg

I’ll update some stuff here but you can follow the early section of this guide, where it explains about the codecs and subtitle settings. Hope it helps.

yep. everythings working fine and dandy now but i had to put the video quality settings to medium quality for 1080p videos >.>

and im still having trouble reading the subtitles. its still cut off on the bottom making the story very hard to follow while trying to read it. is there some way you know to fix that?

Hmm, does the font turn out correctly but positioned wrong or both are wrong???

Have you tried checking the boxes in mencoder settings? make sure it looks this way (pic below). I assume it’s an mkv with embedded fonts, i watch anime and comes out right all the time. Also new version of ffdshow lets u play around with ASS/SSA config (in ffdshow video decoder configuration). Try that and see if it works.

Finally make sure ur tv receives the correct video aspect ratio. I had this issue with my samsung tv when the video was slightly pulled down making the subtitles much lower than it should be, I had to go to tv settings and set to auto-scan (16:9/4:3 bla bla) then everything fit in the tv correctly.Thats all i cant think of lol. Peace out.
