ps3 index console Guide to streaming videos with subtitle on PS3 with Java PS3 Media Server!Alright guys, this is a Guide to streaming videos with subtitle on PS3 with Java PS3 Media Server! PS3 Media Server is a new program so much easier to set up than TVersity. It’s Java based, works for Windows or Linux and capable of transcoding any HD content to your PS3 with subtitles on the fly.

Okay for those people who followed my TVersity guide, you should install Vista Codec Pack and remove “ffdshow-tryouts” although it isn’t necessary.

And this program works well with the Xbox 360 as well! Try PS3 Media Server!

Playing the video files (some extracted from Readme)

- Install PS3 Media Server. Download it here.

- Get and install AVISynth 2.5.7 from here (2.5.8 not recommended)

- Install codec pack, I recommend Vista Codec Pack or if you are using Windows 7, use Win7 Codec Pack

- Set up the FFDShow Audio Decoder Config > Mixer to your preference, or this one 5.1 (3/0/2 LFE)

- Set “Autoload VSFilter” to Yes in Haali Splitter settings. *if necessary*

- Configure Haali Splitter (audio/subtitles language priorities) *if necessary*

- You can have optional codecs i.e. CoreAVC, Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

Fine Tuning PS3 Media Server

Mencoder settings:

Common transcode settings:

- UPDATE: v1.10.5 has improved Mencoder settings especially with subtitles, so no need to play with AviSynth priorities anymore.
- There’s nothing much to tweak for this program as it runs perfectly fine after install.
- Go to Navigation/Share settings and add the folder you want your video files played.
- Download “VSFilter.dll” here. Place it inside Avisynth’s plugin folder found in “Program Files/Avisynth 2.5/plugin”.
- Go to Transcoding Settings to change your Video quality, I use Good Quality and everything plays without stuttering.
*- Change “Avisynth/Mencoder” to 1st priority by clicking the Up/Down arrow on the bottom.*

If your PS3 detects the Media Server, everything should play up nicely!

Notes

- You must have .avi files with .ass subtitle files in the same folder with same name and they will play just fine in your PS3.

Haha, Justin, that’s a great find. I didn’t know it will work on the Xbox, just because the program is called PS3 media server, I guess not!!! Yup, this one is soooo much easier! Good job!

Yes I thought it would work too, but then I got up to my Xbox's Video Library and suddenly next to the Tversity Server (that at that moment didn't work) the PS3 (!) Media Server showed up. So I went into the folder and on my PC the PS3 Media Server said: Xbox found (with a picture of a 360), so it works like a charm :).

Even DVD's can be watched with subtitles (I'm from the Netherlands)! Great app, thanks for mentioning it ;).

Hi Davies
I tried to setup my media server, and it managed to play video files but unable to detect and play and mp3 and photos. Do you think you know why?

Edit: Thanks! Tried that. Still can’t view Photos or listen to MP3.

Jerry, this is unusual! If your videos can play, the MP3 will at least work. How about placing the MP3 and photos in same folder as videos, it might be the shared folder problem!

Hi Davies, I tried your advise. But it still doesn’t work. It still say “There are no titles.”

I can browse all the directories but it will only return “There are no titles”.

Much appreciated!

Hey, managed to solved the problem. It’s actually quite silly of me. I should listen to MP3 by accessing it from the Music section on the XMB and same goes for the photos! :P

Definitely has something to do with your codecs settings, try using Shark007 codec pack, google it.

would anyone have any idea why some MKV files will just pause a quarter or half way through the movie? the movie plays fine and then all of a sudden spontaneously pauses. fast forwarding and rewind also don’t work on these files, when i try to fast forward or rewind, the movie will simply restart itself. the audio also tends to go out of sync with the video. keep in mind that i have some MKV files that play smoothly from start to finish. thanks

90% of the time it could be just that the video’s encoding wasnt that good. PS3MS server picks it up and stops transcoding and hence the pause. I had bad AVI’s and MKV’s and sometimes that happen to me too. The fast forward and rewind should work (all my mkv ones does it) so I’m not too sure about that. If the audio and video goes out of sync, might be the video’s bit rate is quite high, maybe use a lower quality see if that helps!

Here at home the PS3 Media Server restarts after a few minutes, especially when trying to generate the frames of 1 in 1 minute and make a leap forward in the movie. Lock and exit the program (Windows XP). On linux works correctly, but I’m having some problems with the codec … but I’ll solve it … hope …

hi
how to change the font in PS3 Media Server?

i have new font and I would add in the PS3 Media Server..

“the type of subtitles it’s “srt”

John, if you meant you want to change the subtitles font to be displayed in PS3Media server, you need to change it with this program called Aegisub, Google it.
Most likely it will save to .ass subtitle format which is better and easier to customize the font styles.

Hi there! This was tremendously helpful. Thank you so much for posting this.

I only have a simple question; Often when i’ll watch a tv show … after maybe 20 minutes or so, the sound starts to lag. The image doesn’t stutter or anything … but the sound is like 1 second too late.

Any clue on how to fix this would be greatly helpful. Thanks :)

try reinstalling your codec pack and make sure your computer has enough resources! Sometimes halfway through the video my computer’s antivirus starts to run and the sound lag as well so a powerful computer will definitely help a lot.

This worked absolutely great, thank you! I’d been going over and over with TVersity and it couldn’t work at all.

I’ve no complaints and only one question. Perhaps you could help me. It’s not really a critical problem, it’s more of convenience and perfection – I tried playing a bluray copy of Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete (.mkv file) and it works (FINALLY!) but the first and last letter of the subtitles (in some lines) are cut off. Any idea what could be causing this?

In any case, thank you again for all the help :D
