tversitylogo Quick guide to streaming videos with subtitle on PS3 with TVersity!UPDATE: NEW software PS3 Media Server better than TVersity. Guide right HERE.

There are tons of guides to help you do this but I thought I would make a little guide myself for bloggers on WP. Most anime and drama series now use ASS/SSA subtitle format or the much more conventional SRT files so ffdshow would work for everyone. This method should also let you load an external srt subtitle file for your video. This guide should for for Vista 64-bit too.

To install ffdshow-tryouts, download the latest:

- Uninstall all your codecs first!! Uninstall Haali if you have it!

- Some has 2 versions available for the splitters.

For Windows Vista DON’T use Unicode.
Other version of Windows (i.e. 2000/XP) use Unicode.
This might have changed, as newer filters just have Unicode versions. Don’t worry, install and try for yourselves, if it works, good. Not? try another one. I have provided the old links just in case.

We have to install the splitters manually.

  • Copy the file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory
  • Open Command Prompt (Start > Run > type “cmd”)
  • type “regsvr32 matroskasplitter.ax”
  • type “regsvr32 MP4Splitter.ax”
  • If done correctly, you will receive a success prompt.

- Make sure you have a Windows administrator account with a password. Somehow TVersity won’t allow transcoding with subtitles if your account has no password. (do this in Control Panel). Also make sure Media Sharing is disabled in Windows Vista via the Network and Sharing Center.

- Install ffdshow you’ve downloaded

  • Go to “ffdshow video decoder” settings (Start Menu > ffdshow) and scroll to “Subtitles” section and make sure it looks like the picture shown.
  • You should also change the Extensions priority to “srt, ass, ssa” or whichever your external subtitle type is.
  • Please note that external subtitle file has to be exact same name as the video too.
  • Then make sure transcoding is ON, also when adding folders to share in TVersity, make sure in Advanced setting the folder is set to “Always” and not “N/A”. This should make external srt subtitle work.

- Install TVersity. Did i forget to tell you this? (better than Tversity)

  • install without TVersity codec pack and set as a service.
  • Go to Start > Run > type “services.msc” to bring up the services window.
  • Scroll down to UPnP Device Host and make sure it’s set to Automatic.
  • Scroll down to TVersity Media Server, double click to open it’s Properties.
  • You can set to Automatic or Manual. (i have mine set to manual)
  • At “Log On” tab, click Browse > Advanced > Find Now and pick your account
  • Make sure it’s set to an account (mine’s called Administrator) on the computer as shown in the picture.

- Edit TVersity settings for PS3. Did i forget to tell you this? (better than Tversity)

  • Set the media device to Playstation 3.
  • Set transcoder to always ON (you can disable transcoding for avi files as shown below).
  • Resolution can be set to 1280×720 or anything smaller. (i.e. 1024×576, 704×396 as long as smaller number divided by larger number = 0.5625)
  • Optimization: Quality, Wired Connection High and Minimum compression.
  • Tweaking further, go to (Program Files>TVersity>Media Server) and open the profiles.xml file in wordpad and edit the Playstation 3 section.
Change the video and onlineVideo from mpeg16 to mpeg2
<transcodeTarget audio=”audio/x-wav” video=”video/mpeg2″ photo=”image/jpeg”
onlineAudio=”audio/mpeg” onlineVideo=”video/mpeg2″ onlinePhoto=”image/jpeg”
adjustReadStartPos=”false” audioFailFutureSeek=”false” videoFailFutureSeek=”true” />
  • If you have firewall, make an exception for TVersity’s mediaserver.exe.

- I notice the PS3 transcoding stutters once the bitrate reaches 9mbps or more, especially in my mkv files. There is a small solution to it. To fix it, I edit the config.xml file in (Program Files>TVersity>Media Server) folder. These settings reduced the bitrate and audio quality but not noticable to my eyes. You can reduce the videoCompressionRatio to something lower. Try playing around with the values.

  • <maxAudioInfo sampleRate=”48000″ bitsperSample=”16″ bitrate=”128000” nchannels=”6″></maxAudioInfo>
  • <maxVideoInfo width=”1280″ height=”720″ bitrate=”4250000” fps=”30></maxVideoInfo>
  • videoCompressionRatio=”18
  • downsampleForConnectionSpeed=”false”

- For avi files which don’t need to be transcoded just make sure you set transcoding as Never. Note that if you have external subtitle file, please set to Always instead.

- Start sharing and test whether it works!

Notes:

- You can add srt subtitle file(s) quickly to AVI files using this tool, AVIAddXSubs. Using the small guide shown here.
- It muxes the files to divx and includes the subtitles. Press Triangle when playing the video and get the subtitle option. With this, you don’t need to share in TVersity, just copy into your flash drive and watch it.
- If you add the divx file in TVersity, it should work without transcoding!

Hmm, thats all i guess! There are other guides around the net just google around to find out which one works for you.
